Jill Sans, artist and owner of The HeArt Box Gallery, and I helped to organize a Steamroller Printing Event on Aspen Street in downtown Flagstaff, thanks to funding by Art X and Creative Flagstaff, and a generous deal on the rental from Flagstaff Equipment. Master printmaker Pavel Acevedo worked with Liv Knoki, director of Wingbeat 88, to design the carving and all week we held community carving events in which community members could add their own elements. We will be printing the carving at Art Walk on Friday September 4 on Aspen Street next to Heritage Square. Come on out to see it, and enjoy the dancing and drumming performances by Guinea Rumba, a women’s West African troupe. Also, come learn about how to protect sacred land by visiting the booths of Wild Arizona and the Sacred Land Alliance, who will also be leading small scale printmaking. And support Wingbeat 88’s kinship based organizing of indigenous people in the region by buying a raffle ticket to win one of the prints rolled by the steamroller.
