Beyond the Frame Exhibition

  • Sedona Arts Center 15 Art Barn Road Sedona, Arizona, 86336 United States (map)

One of my collages, entitled Sapphic Speakeasy, which is a quadriptych on four used paint can lids, will be on view at the Sedona Arts Center from August 21 through September 30. The exhibition is entitled Beyond the Frame: “This exhibit invites artists who challenge traditional artistic boundaries and explore new possibilities in creative expression. This exhibition seeks work that redefines what art can be, and pushes beyond familiar materials, formats, and ideas. Artists working in all media are encouraged to submit work that incorporates experimentation, unconventional materials, or innovative techniques. Beyond the Frame celebrates artists who take risks, challenge barriers, and help shape the evolving future of contemporary art.”

This piece began in New Orleans with an out-of-date flyer for a Sapphic Speakeasy torn off a telephone pole, and several used paint can lids from The Green Project there, a non-profit which sells used building supplies and recycles latex point, diverting millions of gallons from landfill and ground water. The piece explores how queer folks must recycle and reappropriate imagery given the dearth of representation in mainstream media.
