This 12 by 4 inch analog collage on wood panel is one of a series that honors agaves. They are ridiculously gorgeous. But also indigenous folks were cultivating them for baskets, medicine and food long before European colonization—the Europeans couldn’t recognize indigenous agriculture as agriculture. Like most desert creatures, they can thrive in extremely challenging conditions. Agaves can live for several decades and send up only one spectacular bloom before dying.
